Here's how the scam works. I was called by Tec Secure telling me I already had their service to protect against hackers on my computer, but my configsys wasn't setup right, and they needed access to my computer to fix it. I naively granted it. Then they convinced me to buy a Microsoft security software for $400, or $800 the would be good for lifetime (I chose the $800 option), transferrable to future computers. I agree to to send them a check on March 6th. The following Monday, I got a call from their office in Florida saying they received my check and wanted to make sure it was still OK to deposit it. I said, "that's a curious question. I have no idea if you're ripping me off or not because I'm not IT savy, so if it turns out that you are, I'll chalk it up to experience. Go ahead and run it through." The next day I got a call from them, saying their fix didn't work and they wanted to refund my money, and would have to transfer me over to "my technician," who assured me that he would direct deposit $800 into my checking account, and asked me to go online and open up my checking account to confirm that it had arrived. (He said he'd accessed my checking account that way.) But what showed up on what appeared to my my online account with my bank was a $2,800 deposit. "Oh," he said, "we made a mistake. You need to go to a Safeway and buy 4 x $500 Goggle Play Cards and make them payable to 'personal'. Keep your computer on and I'll stay on your cell phone with you while you do it. Be sure not to tell them that they going to us." At first I protested, telling my to just reverse the transaction and make it an $800 deposit the same way he made the $2800 deposit ... then he wiped out my entire account of nearly $15,000 and told me I had to do what he said or he woudn't give me my money back! I pretended to go to Safeway, but I actually went to the bank. They pulled up my account and that $2800 deposit wasn't there, and the check I'd sent them hadn't been presented. I closed that account and opened a new one, putting a stop payment on the check in case it's ever presented. They were trying to scam me out of $2,000. Because I acted quickly, I'm not out a dime. |
