So I got a call from a Debt Collector from "NAS and Associates," the number was: 8884711363. They called saying that I have an outstanding balance on a bank account I have never opened with a bank that i've never been involved with. They told me that I was being sued and they had tried to send me paperwork stating this to be true. I never had received a single notice by mail so I was a little hesitant at first.. I still went along with it and called "the bank" directly with an account number and a phone number that they had provided to me. The number they provided was: 8663354158.(which I later found has no connection to the bank.) I called their number and gave them the account information and they told me that the account was sold to another company that has all my information.. "The bank," tried to say that they couldn't release any information about the account because it was sold to another company. I called the other company and it was an automated robo answering service that tried to ask for my social security number. I immediately hung up without releasing any personal information. Then I looked up my credit and DID NOT see this outstanding credit card debt anywhere on my credit. Then I tried to call back the woman from "NAS" that I had spoken to before to tell her that I didn't want to give away personal information to a random answering service, and that my credit score showed no such debt. She was incredibly convincing and made me believe it wasn't going to show up on my credit. She told me she had my social and all my personal information already and that I owed $1500 to the bank but it would be around $4500 in legal fees if I didn't just pay the debt and tried to fight it.. I got really suspicious at that point and ended up calling the bank by their official number posted online. Once I called the bank by their OFFICIAL 1-800 PHONE NUMBER and gave them the account number that "NAS" had provided... They told me not to worry and it was definitely a phishing scam. They told me not to release information of any sort to the company trying to contact me. I then called "NAS" back and tried to connect with the same employee that had been so convincing on the previous call.. I got ahold of her and told her that the Banks official number had mentioned to me that the number she gave me didn't have anything to do with the Bank. She immediately transferred me to her manager without saying a word. Then once I was speaking with the "Head of NAS" who said is name was Chris.. he tried to convince me that the account was my account and started using profanity and was extremely rude. I did not settle down and said I was going to be reporting his company for fraud. As soon as I said that he hung up and then blocked my number from calling back. Watch out for this elaborate scam. I would never give my personal information to a debt collector stating I owe money on an account I have never even opened or had anything to do with.
